I would much rather use one of the extra buttons on my mouse than right click to make the stroke patterns, but I cannot figure out how to use the X1 bind which I am assuming is just a placeholder but I'm not sure how to edit it.

Hi I will try to explain it quite simply :)
First, you have to go to Options -> General and in the Stroke Button select which mouse button will draw the gesture. As you will see, you can assign two different mouse buttons and each of them can be assigned different actions, which can be additionally used with Modifiers. So there are many possibilities.
Remember that when you assign a Secondary Stroke Button to a specific button, you must check the "Use Secondary Stroke Button" box in a specific action.
